How to Start as a UGC Creator

40 guides

Almost everything written about starting in UGC assumes the hard part is making the content. It is not. Most people can film a usable product video on a phone within a week. The hard part is the gap between being able to do the work and having a brand believe you can — and that gap is closed with evidence, not with equipment.

The posts here deal with the genuine blockers: no portfolio, no experience, no following. All three are real, and all three are solvable, but not by the advice that usually gets given. Buying a ring light does not solve any of them. Making three spec videos for products you already own solves the first two, because a brand hiring for UGC is buying content, not audience — which is also why the follower count that matters for influencer deals is close to irrelevant here.

The honest part most guides skip is timing. A first paid deal usually takes a few weeks of consistent applying, not a few days, and the creators who give up are almost always the ones who expected it faster rather than the ones who were worse at it. Knowing the realistic shape of that curve up front is what makes it survivable.

Where these posts point at live jobs, they point at listings with the pay range stated, so you can see what the work is worth before you spend an evening applying for it.

The other thing worth learning early is which opportunities to ignore. Unpaid exposure collaborations and gifting-only offers are common at the entry level, and they are far less often a stepping stone to paid work than they are presented to be. A brand unwilling to pay for a first piece of content rarely pays for the fifth. Spec work you own outright is a better use of the same hours, because it builds a portfolio that belongs to you rather than to someone else's campaign.
