Job Description

We are a growing e-commerce brand in the sports and outdoors space looking for an experienced email marketing and retention specialist to join us on an ongoing freelance basis. This is not a role for someone who simply schedules newsletters. We are looking for a commercially focused email marketer who can help us build a stronger retention engine, increase the revenue generated through email, and materially improve our repeat customer rate. Our current repeat customer rate is approximately 16%. Our medium-term target is to increase this to 30%. THE ROLE You will work closely with the founder to manage and improve our overall email marketing strategy, including: Planning and managing our ongoing EDM campaign calendar Working with the founder to identify monthly marketing moments, product focuses, launches, promotions and customer education opportunities Drafting and building email campaigns for founder approval Managing, auditing and continuously improving our automated email flows Developing more advanced post-purchase, cross-sell and customer lifecycle automations Creating targeted journeys based on products purchased, purchase history, customer type and number of previous orders Working with our graphic designer to create new, on-brand email graphics and campaign assets Testing subject lines, preview text, send times, offers, creative and messaging Monitoring email performance and identifying opportunities to improve revenue, engagement and customer retention Reporting on results and recommending clear actions based on the data Nothing will be sent or scheduled without final approval from the founder, but we are looking for someone who can confidently lead the strategy, preparation and execution. 1ST PRIORITIES Our basic email flows are already set up, but many are outdated and need to be rebuilt or significantly improved. The first major project will be implementing and optimizing our post-purchase and cross-sell ecosystem. This may include: Product-specific post-purchase flows First-time buyer journeys Repeat customer journeys Cross-sell and complementary product recommendations Second-purchase conversion flows Customer education and product usage emails Review and user-generated content requests Replenishment and repurchase reminders Win-back and lapsed customer campaigns VIP and high-value customer segmentation - We have many of these created and ready to implement under your guidance. We want to move away from generic automations and create more relevant communication based on what each customer has purchased and where they are in their relationship with the brand. YOUR OBJECTIVES Your performance will ultimately be measured against two primary goals: 1. Increase total revenue generated through email marketing 2. Increase our repeat customer rate from approximately 16% to 30% We understand that retention improvement takes time, but we want someone who can develop a clear strategy, establish the right reporting, and demonstrate measurable progress from the get-go. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The ideal freelancer will have: Proven experience managing email marketing for established e-commerce brands Strong experience with Klaviyo A deep understanding of customer retention, segmentation and lifecycle marketing Experience building post-purchase and cross-sell automations Strong copywriting and campaign planning skills The ability to interpret performance data and turn it into practical improvements Experience working with founders, designers and other marketing partners A strong understanding of promotional campaigns without relying entirely on discounts Excellent attention to detail and quality control A proactive and commercially minded approach Experience in sports, fitness, apparel, accessories, running or outdoor products would be highly regarded, but is not essential. HOW WE WORK This is intended to be an ongoing freelance position rather than a one-off project. You will work directly with the founder and collaborate with our graphic designer. We value speed, clear communication, strong ideas and accountability. We are not looking for an agency-style relationship where the work is passed between multiple junior team members. We want to know who will actually be managing the account and completing the work.
